Members of the International Journal for Academic Development (IJAD) editorial team will run a writing retreat for people writing about academic/educational/ faculty development. The purpose of the retreat is to support scholarly writing about academic development. Participants will work on their own writing and give/receive feedback from a small group of peers and a member of the IJAD editorial team. Writing projects must be focused on academic development, but the genre and audience for these projects are wide open. There is also no expectation that participants are writing for IJAD. The retreat is open to both new and established scholars.
Retreat participants will be placed in small writing groups to set goals and provide peer feedback to one another, with each group facilitated by an IJAD editor. Retreat participants should be prepared to focus on their writing for the entire retreat, and participants should make meaningful progress on their writing during the retreat.
The cost of the Writing Retreat is only CHF 150.00. If you think you are eligible for a scholarship to fund this cost, please send an email to Klara Blonder Laksov indicating your reason before you register. Participants from countries with newly established networks and regions with budgetary struggles in the university sector will be prioritised for the scholarship to ensure regional diversity.
Are you unsure whether your writing project will be suitable for the Writing Retreat? Please send an email with your questions to Johan Geertsema.
The Writing Retreat will be held on 13-15 June 2020, from 9:00 to 17:00 each day, in the ETH Main Building (the location of the ICED 2020 conference). Please note that the third day of the Retreat (15 June 2020) overlaps with the pre-conference workshops and you may not sign up for both.
The cost of the Writing Retreat is CHF 150.00. This includes refreshments in the morning and afternoon plus lunch each day. The fee also funds facilitation of writing and the rooms we will use.
A shared dinner at your own expense will be organised on the evening of 13 June at a local restaurant, Linde Oberstrass. For the evening of 14 June participants may organise their dining as they wish.
Note that participants are responsible for finding and funding their own accommodation during the Writing Retreat (and the ICED 2020 conference). Please see the following list of recommended accommodation options.
How to register for the IJAD Writing Retreat
Step one: Register and pay for the IJAD Writing Retreat under “Further options at additional charge” when you register for the ICED 2020 conference (conference registration opens on 1 October 2019).
Step two: After you register for the Writing Retreat, please submit information about your writing project to the organisers using this form. This step is mandatory.
On the basis of the outline of your objectives for the retreat the organisers will divide you and your co-participants into separate writing groups, each to be facilitated by an IJAD editor. You will stay with the small group throughout the retreat. The groups will meet twice a day for peer feedback on writing and goal setting, and to discuss obstacles identified in the writing process. The rest of the time will be devoted to your own writing. You can also take part in an optional workshop about writing/publishing.
