Ban on dangerous laser pointers in Switzerland

Conference presenters: do you use a laser pointer in your presentations? If so, please take careful note of the below information!

The Swiss Federal Council has implemented a ban on certain laser pointers, effective from 1 June 2019. The aim of the ban is to prevent injuries and dangerous glare generated by laser beams. From 1 June 2019, possession, import, distribution or transit of dangerous laser pointers is forbidden in Switzerland.

Forbidden laser pointers: If your laser pointer has one of the labels shown on the right (or similar) it is regarded as dangerous, and is forbidden.

If your laser pointer has NO label, do not bring it with you either.

Permitted laser pointers: Only laser pointers clearly labelled Class 1 (see image below) may be used after 1 June 2019. These are not regarded as dangerous.

For this reason, ICED 2020 conference presenters must NOT bring unlabeled or non-Class 1 laser pointers into Switzerland. If you are not sure – don’t bring it!
